Chapter 7

Raghunath watched Laxmi as she stood near the doorway, wiping the tears from her cheeks. He could see that his words had hurt her, but this time he did not become angry or defensive. Instead, he walked toward her slowly and stopped in front of her.

"Laxmi, look at me," he said softly.

She hesitated before lifting her eyes to his.

"I don't know how to undo everything I have done to you," he admitted, his voice quieter than usual. "I know I have frightened you, and I know that saying sorry cannot erase those memories. But when I tell you that I care about you now, I want you to believe that I mean it."

Laxmi looked at him for a long moment, trying to understand whether the man standing before her was really the same Raghunath she had known all these years.

"You keep saying you care about me," she whispered, "but sometimes I don't know whether I should believe you."

"I know," he replied. "That is why I am not asking you to forget everything overnight. I only want you to give me a chance to show you."

He gently reached for her hand, and when she did not pull away, his fingers slowly intertwined with hers. There was something unexpectedly comforting about the warmth of his hand, and for a moment, the tension between them seemed to disappear.

Raghunath lifted his other hand and carefully moved a loose strand of hair away from her face. His fingers lingered near her cheek as he looked into her eyes.

"May I?" he asked quietly.

Laxmi's heart began beating faster. She knew what he meant, and this time she did not feel the fear she had once carried whenever he came too close. Instead, she found herself looking at him with a strange mixture of nervousness and affection.

She gave the smallest nod.

Raghunath leaned toward her slowly, giving her enough time to change her mind. When their lips finally met, the kiss was gentle and unhurried, carrying none of the anger or impatience that had once existed between them.

Laxmi closed her eyes and allowed herself to stay there for a moment.

When they finally pulled apart, Raghunath remained close, his forehead resting lightly against hers.

Laxmi gave him a faint smile through the last traces of her tears.

"That felt different," she whispered.

Raghunath smiled softly.

"It should have been different from the beginning."

She looked at him, and something inside her loosened.

For once, his touch did not remind her of fear.

It reminded her that perhaps, slowly and painfully, they were learning how to love each other in a way they ha

d never known before.
